Family Deities: Wamala

Thanks for joining us for another Families’ Deity! We’re exploring deities that tie into families and family values, or who are important to the family unit or children in some way. This month, we are exploring the mysterious God, Wamala

Who was Wamala?

Wamala is a God honoured in Bunyoro, Uganda and East Africa.

He is an oracle, who would possess a medium after an offering of milk had been made. Once all messages had been delivered, a feast with singing, dancing and fires would take place, with the medium receiving special treatment.

Some say He was the last ruler of the Backwezi Dynasty, who possibly left for the Netherworld or simply vanished into Lake Wamala, Singo.

His special temples were near royal palaces.

Why is Wamala one of our Family Deities?

He is a God of plenty and able to gift additional children, crops, and domestic animals, when his favour has been gained.
